Abnormal Pap smear results are categorized into several types:
- ASC-US (Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance): This is the most common abnormal Pap test result. It means that the squamous cells do not look completely normal, but it is not clear if the changes are related to HPV infection. - LSIL (Low-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion): Indicates mild changes, often due to an HPV infection. - HSIL (High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion): More severe changes that have a higher likelihood of progressing to cancer. - AGC (Atypical Glandular Cells): Indicates that the glandular cells, which are found in the cervical canal, have abnormalities.
