The prognosis depends on the results of the SLN biopsy. If the sentinel nodes are free of cancer, the likelihood of metastasis is low, and less extensive treatment may be required. Conversely, if cancer is found in the sentinel nodes, additional treatment such as chemotherapy, radiation, or more extensive lymph node removal may be needed.
