What Are the Symptoms of Ethylene Glycol Poisoning?
The symptoms of ethylene glycol poisoning usually occur in three stages:
Stage 1: Within 0.5 to 12 hours post-ingestion, symptoms may include intoxication, nausea, vomiting, and central nervous system depression, similar to alcohol intoxication. Stage 2: Within 12 to 24 hours, metabolic acidosis, hyperventilation, and cardiovascular symptoms such as hypertension and tachycardia may develop. Stage 3: After 24 to 72 hours, renal failure, oliguria, and anuria can occur due to the formation of calcium oxalate crystals in the kidneys.
