hypothalamic pituitary ovarian (hpo) axis
How Does the HPO Axis Work?
The HPO axis operates through a series of feedback mechanisms:
1. The hypothalamus secretes
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)
.
2. GnRH stimulates the anterior pituitary gland to release
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
and
Luteinizing hormone (LH)
.
3. FSH and LH then act on the ovaries to promote the growth of
follicles
and the production of
estrogen
and
progesterone
.
