Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or inside an ovary. If a cyst becomes large, it can cause the ovary to move from its usual position, leading to pain that may radiate to the lower back. The pain can be acute and sharp if the cyst ruptures or causes ovarian torsion.
