Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is usually caused by a bacterial infection that spreads from the vagina to the reproductive organs. The most common bacteria responsible are Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, both of which are sexually transmitted infections. Other factors include multiple sexual partners, douching, and having a history of PID.
