Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that is commonly used in combination with trimethoprim. This combination is known as co-trimoxazole. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA).
