Once fertilization occurs, the zygote begins a series of rapid cell divisions known as cleavage. It divides to form a multicellular structure called a blastocyst. This blastocyst travels down the fallopian tube to the uterus, where it implants into the uterine lining, a process essential for establishing pregnancy.
