Fertilization typically occurs in the fallopian tubes where the sperm meets the egg. During ovulation, a mature egg is released from the ovary and travels down the fallopian tube. If it encounters viable sperm, fertilization can take place. The sperm must penetrate the outer layers of the egg to merge their genetic material.
