If the HPV test is positive, it means that the patient has a higher risk of developing cervical cancer. In such cases, a colposcopy is usually recommended to closely examine the cervix and take biopsies if necessary. If the HPV test is negative, the risk of cervical cancer is lower, and a repeat Pap smear in one year might be suggested.
