The most common cause of HDN is Rh incompatibility. If the mother is Rh-negative and the baby is Rh-positive, the mother's immune system may produce antibodies against the baby's red blood cells. These antibodies can cross the placenta and destroy fetal red blood cells, leading to severe anemia and other complications.
