The primary method of preventing HDN is through the use of Rh immunoglobulin (RhIg), also known as Rho(D) immune globulin. RhIg is given to Rh-negative mothers during pregnancy and after delivery to prevent the development of antibodies against Rh-positive blood cells. This treatment has significantly reduced the incidence of HDN.
