There are two main types of ultrasound imaging used in gynecology: transabdominal ultrasound and transvaginal ultrasound. In a transabdominal ultrasound, a handheld device called a transducer is moved over the abdomen. For a transvaginal ultrasound, a specially designed transducer is inserted into the vagina. Both methods are non-invasive and typically painless.
