A co-oximeter uses spectrophotometry to measure the absorption of different wavelengths of light by hemoglobin derivatives in the blood. By analyzing these absorptions, the device calculates the concentrations of the various forms of hemoglobin. This information is then used to assess the patient's oxygen-carrying capacity and detect any abnormalities.
