The cervix turns blue or purple primarily due to increased vascularity and blood flow in the region during pregnancy. This increased vascularity is necessary to support the growing fetus and the expanding uterine tissues. The visible change in color is a result of the engorged blood vessels beneath the epithelial layers of the cervix and vagina.
