BBT rises due to the release of progesterone after ovulation. During the first half of the menstrual cycle, estrogen keeps the BBT lower. After ovulation, the corpus luteum produces progesterone, which causes a slight increase in BBT, typically by about 0.3 to 0.6 degrees Fahrenheit (0.15 to 0.33 degrees Celsius).
