There are several types of catheters that may be used in gynecology:
Indwelling catheters (Foley catheters) - These are left in place for an extended period and have a balloon at the end to keep them in place. Intermittent catheters - These are inserted temporarily to drain the bladder and then removed. Suprapubic catheters - These are surgically placed through the abdomen directly into the bladder.
