Performing a BSE involves both visual and physical examination techniques:
1. Visual Examination: - Stand in front of a mirror with shoulders straight and arms on the hips. - Look for any changes in contour, swelling, dimpling of the skin, or changes in the nipples.
2. Physical Examination: - Raise arms and look for the same changes. - While lying down, use the right hand to feel the left breast and vice versa. Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few fingers, keeping them flat and together. - Cover the entire breast from top to bottom and side to side, from the collarbone to the top of the abdomen, and from the armpit to the cleavage. - Follow a pattern to ensure that the entire breast is covered. You can use circular motions, up-and-down lines, or a wedge pattern. - Finally, feel your breasts while standing or sitting, which is often easiest in the shower.
