Results from a DEXA scan are reported as T-scores and Z-scores:
T-score: This compares the patient's bone density with that of a healthy young adult of the same sex. A T-score of -1.0 or above is considered normal, between -1.0 and -2.5 indicates osteopenia (low bone mass), and -2.5 or below suggests osteoporosis. Z-score: This compares the patient's bone density with that of people in the same age group and body size. A Z-score below -2.0 may indicate a problem that requires further investigation.
