The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a group of more than 200 related viruses, some of which can cause genital warts and others that can lead to cancer. The high-risk HPV types, particularly HPV-16 and HPV-18, are responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases.
