Several factors can increase the risk of a newborn developing a GBS infection: 1. Premature birth (before 37 weeks of gestation). 2. Prolonged rupture of membranes (water breaking 18 hours or more before delivery). 3. Fever during labor. 4. A previous infant with GBS disease. 5. GBS bacteriuria during the current pregnancy.
