During the early follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, multiple follicles start to grow under the influence of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Around the mid-follicular phase, one follicle outgrows the others and becomes dominant due to its increased sensitivity to FSH and its ability to produce estrogen. The other follicles regress through a process called atresia.
