Diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis typically involves a pelvic exam and a sample of vaginal discharge. The sample is examined under a microscope for the presence of clue cells, which are vaginal cells coated with bacteria. The vaginal pH may also be tested, as a pH higher than 4.5 can be indicative of BV. Additionally, a "whiff test" may be performed, where a sample of discharge is mixed with potassium hydroxide to see if a fishy odor is produced.
