While both conditions involve the presence of endometrial tissue outside its usual location, adenomyosis specifically refers to the endometrial tissue growing into the muscular wall of the uterus. This can cause an enlarged uterus and painful, heavy periods. It is different from endometriosis, where the tissue grows outside the uterus.
