There are several types of prenatal screening tests available:
1. First Trimester Screening: This includes a blood test and an ultrasound, typically done between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy. It screens for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome and Trisomy 18.
2. Second Trimester Screening: Also known as the quad screen, this blood test is performed between 15 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. It measures four substances in the mother's blood to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects.
3. Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT): This is a highly accurate blood test that analyzes fetal DNA present in the mother's blood. NIPT can be done as early as 10 weeks and screens for conditions like Down syndrome, Trisomy 13, and Trisomy 18.
4. Ultrasound: Routine ultrasounds are used to monitor fetal development and detect physical abnormalities. The anatomy scan, usually performed around 20 weeks, is a detailed ultrasound that examines the baby's organs and structures.
