What are Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)?

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are infections that occur in any part of the urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra. UTIs are more common in women than men due to anatomical differences.

What Causes UTIs?

UTIs are primarily caused by bacteria, with Escherichia coli (E. coli) being the most common culprit. Other bacteria such as Staphylococcus saprophyticus can also cause infections. Factors such as sexual activity, certain types of birth control, menopause, and personal hygiene can increase the risk of developing a UTI.
