Why is Vaginal pH Important?

The normal vaginal pH ranges from 3.8 to 4.5, which is slightly acidic. This acidic environment is crucial for maintaining a healthy balance of microorganisms in the vagina. An imbalance in pH can lead to infections and other gynecological issues.

When is a Vaginal pH Test Recommended?

A vaginal pH test is often recommended when a woman experiences symptoms such as unusual vaginal discharge, odor, itching, or irritation. It is also useful in diagnosing the cause of recurrent urinary tract infections and during routine gynecological exams.

How is a Vaginal pH Test Performed?

The test is simple and can be performed in a clinical setting or at home. A healthcare provider will use a pH strip or swab to collect a sample of vaginal fluid. The strip changes color based on the acidity or alkalinity of the fluid, which is then compared to a pH scale.

What Do the Results Indicate?
